Rulers by this time were starting to convert to Christianity and therefore created pockets of monotheistic practitioners. He developed a following in Mecca, which precipitated a growing opposition in the city. The opposition created trouble for the Prophet, and he was kicked out of Mecca. He undertook a journey, called the Hijra, to Medina, where a new religious community was formed with Muhammad at its head.
